The national rugby sevens team, Shujaa scooped a win in their third group match after losing their opening two matches at the second leg of the world rugby sevens series in Dubai on Friday.
Shujaa upset Canada by winning 26-14 securing a spot in the cup quarters as best runners-up.
Prior to the match, Shujaa had lost 21-14 to Australia in their opening group fixture before disappointingly bowing to a late 24-21 loss to USA in their second game.
Johnstone Olindi’s brace, a try by Edmond Anya and Alvin 'Buffa' Otieno helped to see Shujaa to the last eight of the tournament for the second time in a week.
Ahead of the Dubai 7s second leg, Lavin Asego, the first Kenyan to hit 1000 points at the WorldRugby 7s, presented his famous number 10 shirt to Johnstone Olindi.
Olindi put in a brace as the last meaningful moment of the game he scored a try , Shujaa winning 26-14 and consequently advancing as one of the two best losers under fortuitous circumstances.
After the match Kenyas ‘Buffalo’ was interviewed by the press where he pointed out the tactics that the team changed to turn around their poor start.
“We decided as a team that we needed a win and that was what we came for,” Otieno stated.
On having fans back at the pitch Otieno noted that as players they enjoy having fans around as they always want to give a good performance in front of them.
