The Ministry of Sports has requested Kenya's hockey team to trim their squad ahead of next months' African tournament.
According to Kenya Hockey Union President Nahashon Randiek the Ministry of Sports has requested them to trim their squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations that will begin next month in Accra, Ghana.
Nahashon highlighted that a smaller travelling group would fit into its budget for the continental championship.
He added that they would negotiate with the Ministry and reach an understanding on the final squad number.
“We are preparing with the budget in mind. Most likely we’ll have to reduce the travelling team in the technical bench to fit the Ministry's request. We’ll continue to discuss with them,” Nahashon stated.
The union's president noted that the Kenyan team could be handicapped by fatigue if only a few players are available for selection, adding they have to train harder given league matches have not been played for close to two years.
After a draw conducted on Tuesday, December 14, Kenya was placed in Pool A with defending champions South Africa and Namibia.
Those placed in Pool B are runners up Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda.
Only seven teams will participate in the 11th edition of the men's competition as eight teams will represent their countries in the eighth edition for women.
In the women 's category, Kenya has been grouped with defending Champions Ghana, Nigeria and Zambia in Pool B.
In group A, 2017 champions South Africa are shortlisted with Namibia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
The men's team together with the women's team, are currently training at the City Park hockey stadium in Nairobi ahead of their ACN2022 fixtures.
