Spanish duo of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Turin giants Juventus are at the risk of facing a two season ban from the Champions League and other Uefa competitions over their involvement in the European Super League as they are the only clubs remaining in the breakaway project.
The trio are the only teams from the original “Dirty Dozen teams” who are yet to pull out of the ESL and if not that could leave them facing a heavy sanction which would also mean the Champions League goes ahead without three of Europe’s biggest clubs as from next season.
UEFA on Wednesday May 12, issued a statement which stated “In accordance with Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors have today been appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential violation of UEFA’s legal framework by Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona and Juventus FC in connection with the so-called ‘Super League’ scheme.
UEFA are ready to hit the trio with a two year ban as the ultimate threat to stop the breakaway from happening again and they are also hoping it will persuade the three European heavyweights to end their stand-off plans.
Uefa President Aleksander Čeferin is currently tough on accepting apologies from the other nine clubs that backed out of the ESL including the Premier League’s Big Six of Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham plus Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and Inter.
The Uefa President has already hit the other nine clubs with fines as each of them will have to pay £1.44m (Ksh 182,000,000) up front and another five per cent of their next season’s Uefa competition earnings which could reach around £7m (Ksh 910,000,000).
Despite the harsh threats from Uefa,Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has refused to back down, taking the case to court in pursuit of reducing UEFA’s powers while Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli strongly backed him up.
Juventus however will be in a much deeper mess if at all they dont opt out of the Super League project as they have been issued a warning by the Italian FA of kicking them out of the Serie A next season if they are still in the Super League.
