Tennis star Roger Federer will retire after participating in the Laver Cup in London next week.
Federer, 41, on September 15, thanked the fans, his family and other stakeholders for their support in his illustrious tennis career.
The Tennis star has been out of action for some time since Wimbledon in 2021, after undergoing triple knee surgery.
With a tough road to recovery and age catching up with him, Federer announced the plans to hang his boots in an emotional statement.
“The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event. I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but just not in Grand Slams or on the tour.
“This is a bittersweet decision because I will miss everything the tour has given me. But at the same time, there is so much to celebrate. I consider myself one of the most fortunate people on Earth. I was given a special talent to play tennis, and I did it at a level that I never imagined, for much longer than I ever thought possible,” part of his statement read.
The Laver Cup 2022 will take place at The O2 Arena in London, from September 23 to September 25. The 41-year-old tennis star has played more than 1500 matches over his 24 years professional career.
Federer also thanked his wife Mirka, for supporting him, noting that she event went overboard to watch his games while she was over eight months pregnant.
“Seeing my family cheering me on from the stands is a feeling I will cherish forever,” Federer added.
