
Moses Kibet produced one of the most spectacular performances ever witnessed on Australian soil on Sunday, September 18, 2022 to break the Sydney Marathon course record.
Kibet, who led two other Africans to break the previous course record, reached the tape in a time of 2:07.03.
His compatriot Cosmos Matolo Muteti and Ethiopian athlete Chalo Deso Gelmisa settled for second and third position respectively.

Muteti crossed the finishing line in 2:07.05 while Gelmisa who ran away with the Paris Marathon title in April this year clocked 2:07.09.
The previous record of 2:07.50 was set in 2019 by Yuta Shitara, a Japanese athlete.
In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Tigist Getachew overcame a strong field to clinch the title in 2:25.10 ahead of her compatriot Letebrhan Haylay Gebreslasea who clocked 2:25.45.
Gebreslasea was closely followed by Eritrean international Nazret Weldu Gebrehiwet who finished the race in 2:26.14.
The Sydney Marathon is in the process of being incorporated into the World Marathon Majors.
China-based Chengdu Marathon and South Africa’s Cape Town Marathon are the other high profile races that are in contention to become part of the World Marathon Majors.
Some of the events that are part of the prestigious category include Tokyo Marathon, London Marathon, Berlin Marathon, New York City Marathon and Chicago Marathon.
