Kenyan Basketballers Playing Abroad

Kenya has not disappointed in producing basketball talents that have succeeded internationally. 

Team Kenya looks at some of the Kenyan basketball players playing abroad: 

Felmas Adhiambo Koronga 

Felmas Adhiambo Koronga has had a quite successful basketballing career, having been the first Kenyan and African player to be nominated for the Women Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Player of the Year Award.

The Kenyan basketball player, in April 2020, was ranked the second-best Junior College basketball player in the US, as per the World Exposure Women’s Basketball report. 

The 26-year-old basketballer was also the first Kenyan-born woman to play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament.   

Koranga made history in 2018 by becoming the first woman to record 22 rebounds in a single Sun Belt game.  

Her father, Elijah Koranga, played for the military football side Scarlet Football Club now Ulinzi Stars and was featured for the Kenya National football team, Harambee Stars.  

Francis Onono 

Popularly known as Brigeddia General, Onono plays for the Austin Semi-pro basketball team.

He helped his team to become the season's champions. 

Onono was vital to his team's win in their last match even though he was paying through pain,  having been hospitalised one week before the match day.  

This was after he got to feature for the team by chance following a mishap with his teammates that created room for him to play and propel them to victory.   

The basketball player was lauded by Kenyans online, who congratulated the tremendous progress the former Churchill Show comedian showed.  

Mercy Wanyama 

Mercy Wanyama is the younger sister to Victor Wanyama and McDonald Mariga and plays basketball for Spanish League 2 side AD Cortegada. 

The 30-year-old basketballer has previously played for Avilés Basketball Sports Group (ADBA) in Spain and Teodora Saric of Serbia. 

In Kenya, she played for Equity Hawks from 2016 to 2018 before becoming Spain's first female Kenyan basketball player. 

She attributes part of her success to her brothers, Victor and Mariga, who helped her advance her sports skills. She notes that they helped her adjust, and she finally decided to hit the gym. 

She was first capped in Kenya for the under eighteen during her expected time to sit for the MOCK Exams. 

Mercy, whose father is a former AFC Leopard player, represented Kenya Basketball Federation's Women's premier league.
