Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba confirmed that South African sports broadcaster, SuperSport will return to cover Kenyan football.

The CS was speaking in Rarieda after attending a friendly match between Gor Mahia and Rarienda combined on Sunday, December 25.

He noted that the preparations are on course and expected to be ready by the end of the 2022/2023 FKF Premier League season.

“I have struck a deal with Multichoice that will see SuperSport coming back to start televising football because that is one way of marketing our talents.

“I expect at the conclusion of this season we should be ready to roll the live broadcast,” Namwamba noted.

Through this agreement with the government, SuperSport is set to make a return to broadcasting Kenyan football after a five-year hiatus.

The South African sports broadcaster stopped the coverage of Kenyan football in 2017 after a disagreement when the Kenyan Premier League was expanded from 16 to 18 teams.

SuperSport then claimed that the expansion was a breach of contract and this prompted their exit from Kenyan football.

The revelation by Namwamba is a fulfillment of a promise he made during his vetting and swearing-in that he would like to bring back SuperSport to cover Kenyan football.

The return of the broadcaster will be a big boost for Kenyan football as it will enable the showcase of the local league to many.
