The Portugal national team on Monday, January 9, 2023, announced the appointment of Roberto Martinez as their new manager.

The managerial role was left vacant after the sacking of Fernando Santos as a result of dismal performances at the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosted by Qatar.

Portugal announced Martinez’s arrival through a statement shared on their social media accounts.

“A new leader at Portugal service. Welcome, coach Roberto Martinez,” read the statement from Portugal.

Martinez recently stepped down as Belgium's head coach after their horror display in Qatar.

Belgium was bundled out of the competition at the group stage despite having a star-studded squad including the likes of Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bryune.

In the previous tournament which was staged in Russia, he guided the side to the semi-final stage where they were beaten 1-0 by the eventual winners France.

Martinez boasts of vast experience at both club and international levels.

Some of the top European clubs that the Spanish international has managed in the past include Everton, Wigan Athletic, and Swansea City.

His coaching philosophy is based on former Barcelona and Ajax tactician the late Johan Cruyff.
