Premier League side Chelsea on Tuesday, January 10, reached an agreement with Spanish side Atletico Madrid to sign João Félix on loan until the end of the 2022/2023 season.

The talented Portuguese international was sought after by a number of top clubs including Premier League leaders Arsenal and Manchester United.

However, Félix opted to pen a deal with a struggling Chelsea side because he was impressed by the club’s project.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed the move, disclosing that the West London club will cover Felix’s full salary.

“João Félix to Chelsea, here we go! Full verbal agreement reached, loan move on €11m fee with 100% salary covered by Chelsea.

“João will fly to London in the next few hours to undergo medical tests and sign,” part of his statement read.

Félix, who was part of the Portuguese squad that featured at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, earns a weekly salary of € 280,385 (approximately Ksh 37 million).

Romano also revealed that the 23-year-old had to first extend his contract with Atletico Madrid until 2027 before being allowed to depart.

Félix joined Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2019 for a club-record for a club record fee of €126 million (approximately Ksh 16.7 billion) from Benfica.

He made 12 appearances for the Diego Simeone-coached side this season and scored three goals.
