
Dennis Ombachi has kept himself busy during this pandemic and his love for cooking has made him earn a few endorsements along the way.
Early this year, Ombachi was named the new ambassador of Golden Fry cooking oil, thanks to his variety of skills. The ‘Roaming Chef’ has been to hone his cooking skills and try new things.
“Athletes were the worst hit by the pandemic as we were all preparing for the Olympic Games. This saw our contracts discontinued as there were no funds for the federations.
“To make matters worse, I had just recovered from my fifth surgery. But I think it was a blessing for me because that’s when I decided to focus more on cooking especially through social media,” he told The Standard Sports in February.
“But I’m almost retiring and I need something to fall back on. If I have to be honest with you, I got into sports out of pure hard work while cooking is my passion.”
“I have come a long way with Bidco, not directly but I worked with them a couple of years back when they were our (Kenya 7s) shirt sponsors. I pitched my ideas to them and even visited their factory,” he explained.
“There is a herd mentality among sports people. I once found myself in that situation but it was after Covid-19 struck that I realised the income I was getting from rugby was not coming anymore. My partner was expecting a baby, so I had to look for an income-generating activity.”
On Thursday June 10, the Kenya Sevens star displayed his amazing cooking styles on Twitter as he prepared lunch for Good Kenyann Childrens Home. The Rugby star prepared chapatis and chicken stew which he later distributed to the kids.
Ombachi said “At the end it’s not about what you have or even what you’ve accomplished. It’s about who you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made better. It’s about what you’ve given back. A simple comfort food recipe that can feed and please a crowd!”
Last week, the Kenya Sevens star gave World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge some cooking lessons. The two underwent a cooking session together, a move that impressed the sporting world.
He is currently in the provisional squad for the World Rugby Series and the Tokyo Olympics team.
