President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday indefinitely suspended Sporting activities in the country due to the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

Following the announcement, several  sports governing bodies who had scheduled activities for this weekend have been forced to reschedule their activities.

There is no timeframe to the suspension which comes at a time when sporting activities in the country were getting back to full throttle after a year's hiatus due to the pandemic.

This order also throws Olympic preparations into disarray as several national squads had embarked on, or were about to start specialized phases of training.

Kenya is set to host a series of high profile events include the Safari Rally, the World U20 athletics championships and the Rugby Africa Barthes U20 Cup. It remains to be seen what the next steps around these events will be.

Local football fans will also have to wait a little longer for action to resume as the Football Kenya Federation also issued a press statement halting all the active leagues across the country.

The Kenya Motor Sports Club also cancelled the KCB Machakos rally that was set to take place on Sunday in Machakos following the decision by the Government of Kenya to suspend all sporting events and as well as declare the cessation of movement within Nairobi and Machakos counties.

In a press conference held at the State House, the Head of State acknowledged the rise of Covid 19 cases within the country and as a remedy, the government has decided to take measures to curb the rising numbers. One of the measures set by the government was to suspend sporting activities within the country, this is after a couple of cases have been reported from various sports governing bodies.
