Rachael Jemutai Mutgaa, a Kenyan marathon runner, has been suspended for three years by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) after she tested positive for Testosterone. Her suspension is effective as of August 2021.
The substance, according to the WADA 2021 Prohibited List, is a non-Specified Substance prohibited at all times.
On May 16, 2021, Mutgaa provided a sample of her urine at the Generali Milano Marathon in Milan, Italy and on July 23, 2021, the WADA accredited laboratory in Barcelona reported an Adverse Analytical Finding in the Sample for Metabolites of Testosterone.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) reviewed the findings and concluded that Mutgaa had not been granted permission for the therapeutic use of the Metabolites of Testosterone found in the Sample.
When she was notified about the findings, the athlete admitted to the violation of the Anti-Doping rules, a move which saw her suspension reduced to three years from the actual four-year ban.
Other consequences of the violation include disqualification of the athlete’s results since 16 May 2021 and the forfeiture of any titles, awards, medals, points prizes and appearance money.
AIU also banned Kuwait’s sprinter Yousef Karam for three years for the presence and use of a prohibited substance.
Mutgaa's sanctions come at a time when Kenya's 100 metres ace Mark Otieno is battling to clear his name after he was provisionally suspended by the AIU for the presence of prohibited substances during the Tokyo Olympics.
Otieno did not take part in the Tokyo Olympics after failing a doping test. The 28-year-old tested positive for anabolic androgenic steroid.
