Vihiga Queens Hoping for a First Win in Champions League Qualifiers

Kenya’s Vihiga Queens will battle it out with Sudan’s Yei Join Stars for a chance to play in the CAF Women Champions League to be played later this year in Egypt.

Ethiopia’s ECB will also be playing Zanzibar’s New Generation in another Group B match at the Kasarani Stadium today as the Ethiopians seek to maintain their position at the top of the log.

Vihiga Queens were on Sunday, August 29, beaten 4-2 by Ethiopia's Commercial Bank (ECB) in the inaugural competition.

The loss put them in third place in Group B with no points so far while ECB leads the table with three points, joint on top with Yei Joint Stars who, unlike Queens, began their Champions League qualification with a 2-1 win over Zanzibar's New Generation.

On Tuesday, August 31, at the Kasarani stadium, Simba Queens faced Uganda’s Lady Doves with the match ending with a 0-0 draw while Burundi’s PVP versus Djibouti’s FAD ended with a 1-1 draw at the same venue.

Harambee Starlets forward Gentrix Shikangwa who leads the line at the 2019 Kenyan Women Premier League champions had earlier stated how she expects tough opposition once the tournament gets underway and how her desire is to help the team in the competition.

“We know everyone is well-prepared, and we are just going in there to take a match at a time. We expect it to be tough, but we have done our part in the training. Personally, I am determined to help the team, and my aim is to become the top scorer at this tournament,” she stated in an earlier interview with CAF media.

If the Queens loose today, they would get bundled out of the tournament.

As the winner earns an automatic qualification to the CAF Women Champions League.
