A record 11-0 thumping of South Sudan’s Yei Join Stars was a statement enough by Vihiga Queens to their opponents as they recovered from a shocking day one defeat to Ethiopia Commercial Bank FC in the ongoing CAF Womens Champions League on Wednesday afternoon.
The Queens had suffered a shocking 4-2 loss to the Ethiopians at Nyayo stadium and faced a potential banana skin again the South Sudanese side that had won their opener against New Generation of Zanzibar.
Lady of the moment Maureen Achieng claimed her maiden hat-trick with Violet Nanjala, starting her first match in the tournament, scoring four in the rout.
The morale boosting winner was enough for the team to brag about lifting the inaugural Cecafa Womens club title and the ultimate ticket to the Caf Womens Champions league scheduled for Egypt in November.
According to Nanjala, the loss to CBE of Ethiopia was just a slip and she says they are going for nothing but the title.
“We were well motivated ahead of this match and the psyche made it possible for us to play like we did today,” she told TeamKenya.
“.We want to assure fans that the title will remain home, let everyone remain calm and support us, we are ready for anyone,” she added.
Her counterpart Maureen Achieng who already has five goals in the tournament credited teamwork to the record breaking result at Kasarani.
“Of course we knew that we had to be at our best to get a good result, we thank God it happened. Teamwork and dedication is all we needed and that worked perfectly for us.” she said.
Up next for Geoffrey Okere’s side is a date with New Generation of Zanzibar on Friday September 3, at the Kasarani stadium. The Zanzibaris also had a rough day in town as they were hammered 10-1 by CBE in the early kick off with their coach Ali Abdulmutik Haji conceding that they were not ready for the tournament.
“We don’t have an active league, we have players sick and injured, we could not match our more superior opponents,” he said.
A lot of valuable lessons have so far been learnt by losing sides in the tournament and what clearly comes out is that any team with a strong league will definitely have an upper hand in the tournament.
