The route, which after being modified is one of the favorites for athletes seeking to record their best times, is completely urban and runs through the streets of central Barcelona.
In the men's race, Kenyan Samuel Kosgei emerged victorious in the 42 Kilometer race clocking a time of 2 hours 6 minutes and 3 seconds.
The decisive attack took place 38 kilometers as Kosgei moved resolutely forward, and there was no desire to keep up with him.
He beat the time mark by one second, which was in 2 hours 6 minutes and 4 seconds, setting a new course record.
The Kenyan with his personal best from Dubai 5 years ago in a time of 2 hours 6minutes and 53 seconds, was only in 11th place in the men's elite thus was not expected to win.
Following in second place was Othmane El Goumri who clocked a time of 2:06:30 as Mohamed Ziani finished at 2:06:33.
However, his compatriots Kipkemoi Kiprono came 5th in 02:06:45 while Marius Kimutai finished behind him in 6th place, clocking in at 02:06:5.
In the women's race Ethiopian Athlete Thadu Thesome, who was making her debut in this marathon emerged victorious.
The previous record which was set in 2019 was 2h 24 minutes and 44 seconds but the 20-year-old debutant by a minute.
She set a new course record with a finish time of 2 hours 23 minutes 53.
Her compatriots Meseret Gola came in second with a time of 2:24:09 as Meseret Belete came in third clocking 2:24:04.
