Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League champions Tusker FC and their FKF Cup counterparts Gor Mahia might after all play their CAF Confederation Cup play-off ties at the Nyayo National Stadium.
The stadium, which was the only CAF/FIFA accredited venue before the last inspection visit, was set to be banned immediately after yesterday’s World Cup qualifier between Kenya and Rwanda.
According to CAF inspectors, the stadium was lacking in a few areas of concern while the other stadium, Kasarani, is way behind the standards required.
There was talk that both Tusker and Gor would opt to play their matches outside the country due to the ban. The two clubs were exploring the possibility of playing at the Chamazi Complex, a huge financial burden that was awaiting.
But now, they might have temporary reprieve.
“The Federation’s Competitions Manager had written to CAF some weeks back asking them to allow the two clubs play the games at Nyayo. As it looks they will be allowed to play there. However, if they make it to the group stages, then either the stadium gets upgraded or they play their home matches elsewhere,” said a source privy to the ongoings.
Tusker will be the first to play at home when they host Tunisian side CS Sfaxien on November 28 while Gor will be hosting Congo Brazzaville side AS Otoho a week later.
