The chairman of the Premier League, Gary Hoffman, will step down from the role at the end of January 2022.

Hoffman through a statement announced that he would step down from his role come January next year.

"It has been a privilege to lead the Premier League through the last two seasons - when the spirit of English football has been more important than ever.”

"Now, I have decided the time is right for me to stand aside to allow new leadership to steer the League through its next exciting phase," Gary Hoffman stated.

The news comes after a backlash from clubs over the league's handling of the Newcastle takeover, with the Premier League thanking Hoffman for his time in charge.

According to a statement by the premier league, Gary was thanked for his committed service to the league.

"He has led the league during the most challenging period in its history and leaves it in a stronger position than ever.”

"The process of appointing a new chair will begin immediately," a league statement read

Reports have been there speculating on Hoffman’s resignation following a backlash from clubs over the Premier League's handling of the Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle United.

Concerns about the league's decision were reportedly raised at a meeting of the 20 member clubs in October.

The Premier League insisted that it had been given assurances from the Saudi Public Investment Fund that the Saudi state would not have control over the club, despite the Fund being overseen by Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.

In the aftermath of the takeover, 18 clubs, with the exception of Newcastle and Manchester City, backed a motion to put in place a temporary ban on owner-related sponsorship.

A working group featuring representatives from eight Premier League clubs is drafting new rules around the issue and is expected to report back at the end of the month.
