Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies made history by clinching the first ever CAF Women’s Champions League title after beating Ghana’s Hassacas Ladies 2-0 in a scintillating finale played in Cairo on Friday night.
The South African girls clinched the competition after preserving an unbeaten run from start to finish, and having also not conceded a single goal in the entire tournament.
"I was afraid we were not clinical enough, but today we were marvelous. I’m very happy of my girls,” said Jerry Tashabalala the Sundowns Ladies head coach.
Andisiwe Mgcoyi starred for the South African side, contributing in both of the two strikes with a goal and an assist. The striker set up Chuene Morifi for the opening goal in the 33rd minute before adding her own in the 65th minute.
Sundowns had to finish the game with 10 men, though the game was already all won after 93 minutes. Regina Mogolola was sent off just two minutes after coming on, following a VAR review.
Kenya and by large the CECAFA region was represented in the tournament by VIhiga Queens who exited in the group stages after suffering two defeats and winning once.
The Kenyan girls who have clinched the Women’s Premier League four times faced off with Sundowns in the group stages, losing by a solitary goal scored after just four minutes.
The Kenyan girls will look back at their performance and encourage themselves that they would have done better, had they concentrated more in their final group match against Nigeria’s Rivers Angels, a match they lost 4-0 after collapsing in the second half.
