After spending three years at Irish outfit Galway United, Kenyan forward Wilson Waweru has extended his stay at the club.
The news over the signing of a one-year contract was announced by the club via a social media post.
Waweru joined Galway United in 2017 after impressive performances at Galway City and Mervue United where he was promoted to the junior team a year later.
Galway United described the 21-year-old striker as a versatile forward and were impressed by his goal return and his telepathic bond with his strike partner Harry Rodgers.
“Exciting young attacker Wilson Waweru has re-signed with Galway United for the upcoming 2022 season.
Waweru emerged in the youth setup as a diverse forward, who is comfortable as a lone striker, or as a part of a duo. This was further highlighted with a nine-goal contribution in his first season in the underage setup, forming a formidable partnership with Harry Rogers,” the club statement read.
After being promoted to the senior team in 2018, Waweru repaid the faith instilled in head coach Alan Murphy as he made five appearances this season.
The following year as the 2020 season came to a conclusion, the forward had already become a regular starter for Galway United.
Waweru had an outstanding season last campaign as he scored eight goals however his side missed a chance to enter into the top tier by six points.
The new Irish First Division is set to kick off on Friday, February 18, with Galway hoping to secure a return back to the Premier League.
