Record Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia will not appoint Ugandan Paul Nkata as their new headcoach.
Nkata was poised to take over from Brighton Mark Harisson but a backlash from fans seems to have convinced the management otherwise.
On Friday January 28, the club unceremoniously dismissed Harrison, his assistant Sammy Pamzo Omollo and goalkeepers trainer Fredrick Onyango following a string of poor results.
A 3-0 thumping by Posta Rangers seem to have put the last nail in the K'ogalo's technical bench which evidently was finding it difficult to put a string of good results.
Gor Mahia are six points off the top spot and have conceded the fewest number of goals in the top division but the hierarchy seems to have thought otherwise.
The appointment of Nkata, whose son Fred plays for the Green Army, did not go well with most of the fans who feared that the ghosts of the past will come to haunt them.
In 2019 while in charge of Kakamega Homeboyz, the Ugandan was vindicated of match fixing and this led to his dismissal with then captain Allan Wanga taking over reigns on an interim basis.
With the 19-time champions struggling to get good results plus reported subbotage within the playing unit, the K'ogalo faithful didn't want there ship to sink deeper.
"As a club, we have made a decision to part ways with coach Mark Harrison, Assistant coach Sammy Omollo and goalkeeper trainer Jerim Onyango. Paul Nkata will take charge on an interim basis with the youth team coach Jared (Otieno)as his assistant while we search for a permanent replacement. We thank the 3 for the services offered to the club,” the club announced on Saturday morning.
Nkata who was recently fired by Mbarara City has coached a number of clubs in the country including Tusker FC whom he won with the league title in 2016. He has also managed Muhoroni Youth, Bandari FC and Muhoroni Youth. He also had a stint at Nairobi City Stars.
