English Premier League defending champions Manchester City has issued a statement following events that led to Phil Foden getting involved in a brawl alongside his family members.

Foden and his family had attended a boxing match between Kell Brook and Amir Khan in Manchester.

Video footage on the sidelines of the event showed a spat between Foden and a group of people, with Foden trying to protect his mother.

"We are shocked and appalled about the nature of the abuse and ensuing assault on one of Phil's family members,” read part of the statement.

"We will continue to give Phil and his family all the support and assistance they need," City said.

The boxing match saw Kell brook outshine Amir Khan on the day, winning the bout in a Technical Knockout in the sixth round.

For City’s Foden, it is not the first time he has been involved in controversy. In December last year, he was left out of the travelling squad for their match against Newcastle alongside his teammate Jack Grealish.

The two went overboard to party overtly after their 7-0 win over Leeds United that had preceded the Newcastle match.

Foden had also been chased out of England National Team’s camp at the Euro 2020 after he flouted Covid-19 regulations by carrying along ladies to their team hotel.

The talented midfielder had been involved in Manchester City’s loss to Tottenham in the Premier League just hours before yesterday’s brawl.

He started the match on the left-wing, but could not help his side get past Tottenham, as their defeat reduced the gap between them and Liverpool to only six points. The Reds have a game in hand.
