When Luc Eymael arrived in Kenya to take over reigns at AFC Leopards, lead striker Allan Wanga was on a bad patch.
Wanga then 26, had not found the back of the net in eleven outings and pressure was mounting on him. Every shot he took either went wide or was easily saved by the keepers.
In July 2013, AFC Leopards played Mathare United at the Nairobi City Stadium. Before a a capacity crowd, Zwang tried all he could to find the back of the net in vain. In the 75th minute of the game, he wasted a golden opportunity that could have earned him his second goal of the season.
Even though Ingwe won the match courtesy of a Jonas Nahimana goal, the Belgian had one task, to convince the fans that Wanga was still the sort after striker in the region.
After the game he walked straight to the Ingwe fans who were chanting 'Wanga must go!' and told them to calm down and they did so unwillingly though.
In the next training session, he asked Wanga to do more shooting practices and that changed the tide, he later went on to score in all but one match Luc took charge of at Leopards.
As the striker announced that he was going to hang his boots at the end of the season, Eymael has said that the Kisumu born striker was one of his best players and did what he requested him to do in the pitch.
"Allan was always ready to learn, he was hungry and wanted to help the team in whichever way, "
"He is a very clever person and very resourceful on and off the pitch. I remember the Mathare match very well, things were not working out for him but he kept pressing until he got it right." Luc told TeamKenya.
"I cannot say how much I contributed to his great form then but I am proud to have worked with him, " he added.
"He replicated his fine form in Sudan, Vietnam and right now he is still doing so at Kakamega Homeboyz." He said.
The special messages to Wanga have continued flowing with many of his former and current teammates acknowledging his contributions on and off the pitch.
The former Kenya international announced earlier this week that he was going to retire at the end of the season to concentrate with his current Sports officer job in Kakamega County.
