Meet Carlo Alcaraz, Third Youngest Masters 1,000 Title Winner

Carlo Alcaraz has stunned the tennis world by becoming the youngest winner of the Miami Open, having won the tournament at just 18 years old.

Alcaraz’s won against Norway's Casper  Ruud on Sunday 3rd April, with 7-5,6-4 in the final.

 Alcaraz joins Rafael Nadal and American Micheal Chang as one of the youngest players to win the title.

He also becomes the first Spaniard to win in Miami.

The 18-year-old has risen through the ranks having been in the 110th position in last year’s  Miami tournament.

Alcaraz is set to walk away with Ksh141.6M ($1.2M). H becomes the first tennis player to bag such an amount since 2006. This is mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic that resulted in the cutting of the cash prize offered in 2021 but the amount has since been tripled.

“I am so happy with the win and for sure with my team,” Alcaraz stated.

The Spaniard is set to move up to 11th place in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings.

 Carlo stated in an on-court interview that he has no words to describe how he felt but is delighted that he won his first Masters 1000 in Miami.

Alcaraz won his first ATP 500 title in February in Rio de Janeiro. He proceed to the semi-finals of the previous Masters 1,000 event at Indian Wells, where he lost to 21-time Grand Slam Winner, Rafael Nadal.

"In my mind, I was able to win the match from the beginning, so I thought I was ready to win the match, win the title. I repeated this to myself in every tough moment,” Alcaraz stated in an interview with the BBC.
