Kenya’s boxing team in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games will fight in borrowed kits after the International Boxing Association (IBA) intervened in their plight.

Team Kenya management failed to secure the required kit on time forcing IBA to reject old kits the boxers presented on Wednesday, July 27.

The old kits were reported to have Nike logo's on them as opposed to directives issued by IBA.

According to reports the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) only paid up for a new order for the competition kit on Monday, July 25, which were to be produced in Pakistan.

Kenya boxing team coach Benjamin Musa, stated that the team will return the kits after the event.

“Boxing Federation of Kenya had to talk to IBA to rescue the situation. We have been allowed to compete with an IBA kit that has no national flag on it,” Benjamin Musa noted.

Musa also noted that boxing with new attires is cumbersome for the athletes.

Kenya will be represented by four boxers at the games with KDF's Nick Okoth being the team's captain. Okoth will be deputized by  Elizabeth Andiego, the Africa Zone Three light heavyweight gold medalist.

Other competitors from Kenya are the Commonwealth Games flyweight bronze medalist Christine Ongare and Africa Zone Three bantamweight champion, Hassan Shaffi Bakari.

Kenya is slated to compete on Saturday, July 30.
