
Harambee Starlets has been drawn in Group A of the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers in the draw conducted on Monday at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
Starlets will play against South Sudan with the winner facing either Ethiopia or Uganda in the second round of qualifiers. The winners of both rounds will qualify for the Africa Women's Cup of Nations (AWCON) to be staged in Morocco in 2022.
The first and second leg fixtures of the first round will be played between June 7 and June 15th, 2021 with the second round’s first and second leg fixtures will be held between October 18 and October 29, 2021.
Harambee Starlets coach Charles Okere says beating South Sudan will be a major step towards ensuring that the team qualifies to the World Cup in 20223.
“We now know whom we are facing. At least we saw them(South Sudan) play against Ethiopia and that has shown us what to expect. Winning the upcoming matches will be a huge step towards our qualification to the World Cup,”Okere said soon after the draw.
“I believe we can make it to the World Cup because we have the support of the federation. It is now us to show what we can do when we take on our opponents,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Kenya U20 women team has also been pooled in Group A alongside Uganda, Burundi, Malawi, Namibia, Angola, Botswana, and Zambia, in the second round of the 2022 FIFA U20 Women World Cup qualifiers.
Kenya will play against Uganda and before being one of the two African representatives in the 2022 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, they will have to go through three more rounds
The women’s U20 continental showpiece first leg fixtures will take place between January 13, and January 15, 2021, with the second leg fixtures to be held between January 27, and January 29, 2021.
