Brilliant Kipruto Bags Chicago Marathon Title

Kenya’s Benson Kipruto ran a tactical race on Sunday, October 9 to win  the 2022 Bank of America Chicago Marathon title in impressive fashion.

Kipruto who won the 2021 Boston Marathon title reached the tape in 2:04.24.

The 31-year-old was in the leading pack from the start of the race, running shoulder to shoulder with a number of athletes that included his compatriots John Korir and Benard Koech as well as Seifu Tura from Ethiopia.

With three kilometres to go, Kipruto turned on  the screw, opening  a few metres gap between him and Tura.

Korir, a sibling to former Boston Marathon winner and Cherangany Member of Parliament Wesley Korir settled for a third-place finish in his Chicago debut.

The reigning Los Angeles Marathon champion clocked 2:05.01 to finish behind Ethiopia's Seifu Tura who crossed the finishing line in 2:04.49.

In the women’s category, Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich took the lead from the start to cross the finishing line in a personal best time of  2:14.18.

Her time was just 16 seconds slower than the current world record of 2:14.04 set by compatriot Brigid Kosgei during the 2019 edition.

American runner Emily Sisson clocked 2:18.29 to settle for second, in the process breaking the national record of 2:19.12 set by Keira D'Amato a few months ago. 

Kenya's Vivian Kiplagat timed 2:20.52 to finish third ahead of Ethiopia's Ruti Aga who crossed past the finishing line in 2:21.41.

Cabinet Secretary nominee for Sports, Culture and Heritage congratulated Chepngetich for the good job..

"Congratulations Ruth Chepng’etich for winning the Chicago Marathon in a personal best time of 02:14:18, just 14 seconds off the world record. Great race. Kenya celebrates you," read his tweet.
