Okutoyi Settles for Auburn University After Receiving Over 30 Scholarships

Auburn University, a higher learning institution based in Alabama, United States has granted Kenyan tennis prodigy Angella Okutoyi a scholarship.

The Mbagathi Primary School alumna broke the news on Monday, October 10, 2022, thanking everyone who made it possible.

“Super excited to announce that I will be continuing my tennis career and education at Auburn University ! Thanks to my family, coaches, friends and everyone who helped me along the way!,” read her statement.

Okutoyi made history on July 9 when she became the first Kenya to bag a Grand Slam title at the 2022 Wimbledon Open.

Angella, who partnered with Dutch international Rose Marie Nijkamp beat the Canadian duo of Kayla Cross and Victoria Mboko (3-6, 6-4, 11-9) to win the coveted title.

Prior to the incredible feat, she had entered into the history books by becoming the first Kenyan woman to win a match at the Australian Open tournament in the junior category.

Okutoyi has been a much sought after talent following her breakthrough with numerous institutions wanting to be associated with her.

Six days ago, a section of British government officials including those from the British High Commission had a breakfast with her to discuss a possible sponsorship deal.

Earlier last month, the teenager who was raised by her grandmother received scholarships from over 30 American Universities.

While making the announcement then, Wanjiru Karani, Tennis Kenya Secretary General disclosed that Okutoyi will visit the interested universities to decide for herself which offer to pick.

The soft-spoken starlet was also among a group of Kenyan athletes that received a scholarship from the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) to help them prepare for the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games to be staged in France.
