Wigan Appoints Kolo Toure as Manager

English Championship side Wigan Athletic on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 appointed former Ivory Coast defender Kolo Toure as its new manager.

According to Wigan, the Arsenal legend has signed a three and half-year contract with them.

“Wigan Athletic Football Club is delighted to confirm the appointment of Kolo Touré as the club’s new first team manager.

“Touré arrives at the club on a three and a half-year deal from Leicester City, where he was operating as first team coach as part of Brendan Rodgers' coaching staff," part of the statement from the club read.

He becomes the first African coach to manage an English club. 

Malachy Brannigan, Wigan Athletic Chief Executive Officer (CEO) revealed that many individuals were interested in their job, but they picked Kolo.

“We are delighted that Kolo has become the new manager of Wigan Athletic Football Club, and the Board are pleased that he is the man to take us forward. 

“We received a high caliber of applicants for the manager’s job in recent weeks, in a very thorough recruitment process as we looked to appoint the right person for the role. 

“From the earliest of conversations we had with Kolo, it was evident to us that he had instantly bought into the values of the Club - with his enthusiasm, knowledge and immense desire to work and be part of Wigan Athletic shining throughout the process," he stated.

The 41-year-old has previously worked under elite managers including Jurgen Klopp and former Manchester City tactician Roberto Mancini.

He also got an opportunity to sharpen his coaching skills under the watchful eyes of the legendary Premier League manager Arsene Wenger.

Kolo, who was part of the Arsenal squad which won the Premier League title without losing a single match got his UEFA Pro coaching license.

His younger brother, Yaya Toure, is currently enhancing his managerial capabilities at the London-based side Tottenham Hotspur.
