World Rugby has outlined a new framework for the future of the Rugby Sevens World Series, which will see the combination of sports and fan entertainment at the different events.

The new framework will see the 7s World Series include seven events, in seven global destinations, across seven months.

The men's series will be reduced from 16 teams to 12 which aligns with the Olympics model. This will see an equal number in both the men's and women's teams.

The events will kick off in December 2023 with both the 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams featuring.

The series will also have an annual ‘Grand Finale’ event that will take place in the seventh round, which will see the top eight ranked teams after the first six rounds compete to be crowned Series champion.

Teams ranked ninth to 12th will join the top four ranked teams from the Challenger Series in a high stake relegation play-off competition.

The four unsuccessful teams will go into regional competitions to qualify for the next Challenger Series, which comprises of 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams competing in the second level of international rugby sevens.

Both men’s and women’s teams will receive equal participation fees.

According to World Rugby, the new changes are meant to benefit the player as the reduction of matches will help players perform at a top level.

The new Series follows a widespread and comprehensive consultation process, involving representatives from participating teams, existing tournament hosts, player welfare representatives, and fans.

2022/2023 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series' next two rounds will take place in Dubai on December 2 to 3, followed by South Africa from December 9 to 11.
