The Cabinet has approved the proposal to have Kenya host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

During the weekly meeting on Tuesday, December 6, it was agreed that Kenya would be partnering with other nations from the East African community to host the continental tournament.

The decision was communicated through a despatch from State House after the morning session that was chaired by President William Ruto.

“As a stepping stone towards the target of Harambee Stars qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in the year 2030, Cabinet approved the proposal to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027, alongside EAC partner states,” part of the statement read.

This move is in the government's bid to revive the prospects of Kenyan football with the Cabinet sanctioning the revival of  soccer in the country.

“This national effort will encompass the rebuilding of the national men’s team, the Harambee Stars, and the rebuilding of the women’s national team, the Harambee Starlets,” the statement read in part.

It was noted that the joint bid would use the power of sports to promote regional integration.

In a previous announcement, Trade Cabinet secretary, Moses Kuria had hinted at a possible joint bid by the Eats African nations.

With the current state of stadiums in the country, it will be difficult for any match to be played in the country because Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums are banned.

In July 2022, CAF president Patrice Motsepe expressed his desire of having the AFCON hosted in the CECAFA region.
