The World football governing body, FIFA, has turned down the request to increase the squad sizes to 26 in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Unlike the men’s tournament, teams in the women’s event usually have 23 players.

According to Sky Sports News, FIFA did not reveal the reasons for rejecting the proposition.

“FIFA has rejected requests to increase the maximum squad size to 26 at next summer’s Women’s World Cup despite Sarina Weigman being among those to call for the move.

“FIFA has not explicitly given its reason for the decision, but Sky Sports News has been told the Women’s World Cup starting after the domestic season has finished played a part in their thinking,” a statement from the English-based media outlet.

The upcoming edition will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. It will be held between Thursday, July 20, and Sunday, August 20, 2023.

Morocco, South Africa, Nigeria, and Zambia are expected to represent the African continent in the tournament.

Kenya could not take part in the African qualifiers due to the ban that was imposed by FIFA earlier this year.

Harambee Starlets were scheduled to face Uganda, but due to the embargo, the latter proceeded to the next stage.

The United States, the most successful nation in the tournament, is the reigning champion. They beat Holland 2-0 in a final played in Lyon, France.
