Careers were launched during the 2023 edition of the Discovery Cross Country Championship on Sunday, January 29.

Among the upcoming athletes whose stars shone during the oldest race in the country include Weldon Langat and Immaculate Anyango who were crowned the 2023 Discovery Cross Country Champions.

Anyango destroyed the field to win the women's category in a race held at the Eldoret Sports Club in Uasin Gishu County.

2022 Stanbic Nakuru City Marathon winner Catherine Relin settled for a second-place finish ahead of Christine Njoki.

In the men's category, Langat showed other competitors dust to win the title in a hotly contested race.

Bravin Kogei stepped on the gas in the few remaining metres to the end of the race to finish second.

One-time 10 km world record holder Rhonex Kipruto, who has been missing in action for a long time, registered a third-place finish.

Discovery Cross Country, which was called The Great Rift Cross Country during its inception, was first held in 1992.

Elsewhere, changes have been made ahead of the upcoming Sirikwa Cross Country World Cross Country Tour slated for Saturday, February 4 at the Lobo Village.

Barnaba Korir, Athletics Kenya (AK) youth development chairperson has announced that the race has been made tougher.

“A few tweaks have been made on the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country Tour Course. The muddy section will be replaced with hurdles that will equally make the race very tough.

“Will this favour the Commonwealth Games 3000m steeplechase champion Jackline Chepkoech?” ended Korir.
