The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has handed out lengthy bans to two players following acts of indiscipline during recent Kenya Cup fixtures.
Kabras Sugar winger Ashiundu Derrick was slapped with a nine week ban after tackling his opponent in the air during the 43-5 Kenya Cup win against Kenya Harlequin at the RFUEA Ground on 20 March 2021.
A statement on the Kenya Cup official website, kenyacup.co.ke reads in part, "Ashiundu was charged under World Rugby Laws Of The Game 9.17 which states, "a player must not tackle, charge, pull, push or grasp an opponent whose feet are off the ground."
Ashiundu’s sanction takes place with immediate effect and runs until 29 May.
Also facing the KRU's wrath was Blak Blak forward Brian Songoi who was also sent off during his team's 32-19 defeat to defending champions KCB at the KCB Sports Club on the same date.
Songoi was charged under World Rugby Laws Of The Game 9.12 which states, ” a player must not physically abuse anyone. Physical abuse includes, but is not limited to: biting, intentional contact with eye (s), reckless contact with eye (s), contact with eye area, punching or striking with hand or arm (including stiff arm tackle), striking with the elbow, striking with the shoulder, striking with the head, striking with the knee, stamping or trampling, tripping, kicking.
His sanction takes place with immediate effect and runs until 2 May.
