The battle to avoid relegation is real and that is what Vihiga United and Nzoia Sugar are facing at the moment.
After a two week break, the two teams meet on Tuesday afternoon at the Sudi stadium each aiming for maximum points in order to avoid relegation.
The home side are yet to lose a match at their backyard this season and will be aiming to maintain that record when they face Vihiga United who survived dropping to the National Super League last season through a relegation play-off.
In the last five fixtures, none of the teams has won a match and this is worrying both coach Mike Mururi of Vihiga and his counterpart Ibrahim Shikanda.
Nzoia sought a little bit of motivation off the pitch on Monday when the team and technical bench paid a charity visit to St Teresa’s school for the mentally challenged in Webuye, Bungoma County.
Nzoia striker Hillary Simiyu feels that this is a chance for his team to make a mark after a break that had them reflect on their bad run in form.
”We have prepared well and ready to rectify the mistakes made from our last matches. We will want to score and not concede,” says the forward.
Vihiga United’s last league action was a 4-0 home defeat to league leaders Tusker FC and the encounter against Nzoia might just be the turning point they need according to goalkeeper Mustafa Oduor, a former Nzoia Sugar keeper.
”It’s always tricky playing against your former employers, emotional even. But we go out wanting just three points. Our preparations have been great and when started in goal, I will deliver I am sure,” he says.
The two teams have met five times in the Kenyan top flight with each team winning twice at home and drawing once.
