Kenya have been officially appointed as the Zone Five Afrobasket qualifiers for women in Nairobi as from July 26 to 31 after Egypt pulled out last week.
This is after Fiba Africa insisted that Kenya, whose basketball standards have risen lately following exploits of the national men's team, should take up the task.
According to Fiba Africa, Rwanda, which could have been another alternative, have their hands full after hosting several activities, with the latest being the Basketball African League (BAL) and are in prepararing to host the Fiba Afrobasket Championships in August.
The Basketball Federation is confident that Kenya has the facilities that were up to standards to stage such a big tourney.
Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Burundi and Tanzania will take part in the event, whose winners will represent the region at the Fiba Afrobasket Championship for women in Cameroon in September.
This will be the first time for Kenya to host such a big tournament that attracts the continental attention.
Despite hosting the Qualifiers the Kenya Women Basketball team will be looking forward to making an appearance at the Afrobasket Games in Cameroon and thus have now shifted focus in their next task which is to first earn a spot at the continental showpiece.
