Leonard Bett and Abraham Kibiwott claimed the first two automatic slots for the Tokyo Olympic Games in the 3000m steeplechase with Olympic champions Conseslus Kipruto dropping out with four laps to go.

Kipruto came into the race nursing a foot injury and it was Kibiwott and Bett who exchanged leads before Bett won in 8:17.26.

Bett came in  second in 8:17.61. Benjamin Kigen finished third in  8:21.32.

Kibiwott and Bett encouraged each other and were clearly elated at their performances, hugging each other after the thrilling race.

"Abraham calling me while finishing the race is what we call teamwork and this will apply once we get in the games,"  Bett said.

"We shall then strategise how to battle for podium places. We must retain the title," he added.

Kibiwott on the other hand said that he was going to do his best to bring gold to Kenya.

"I had prepared well for this race and its such a nice feeling,," said Kibiwott.

"I wasn't sure whether I would win. I just wanted to make the Team. It is my hope that we can go and bring home -a 1-2-3, "  Kibiwott added.
