It was all sweet revenge for the Kenya Rugby 7s squad after they beat Ireland 22-0 to finally earn the hardbattled 9th place in the classification matchup at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium. Despite the not so good performances earlier on after losing 3 opening matches, Shujaa still emerged to have improved from the last Olympic games in Rio where they managed to settle at position 11.
Shujaa didn't waste any time in the games since Johnstone Olindi quickly touched down before successfully converting to give Kenya a 7-0 halftime lead. Kenya dominated further in the second half with Jacob Ojee, Willy Ambaka and Daniel Taabu landing further tries to complete the win. In Pool C, the Kenyans finished last with only 3 points garnered.
Captain fantastic, Amonde was quite emotional after the final whistle as his career came to an end. The 6'2 forward has been on hand to lead Shujaa to seven consecutive World Rugby Sevens Series appearances including the famous Singapore victory. Amonde departs the scene as the side is going through a significant rough patch. For the first time in 12 years, Kenya will have to qualify for the 2022 Rugby Sevens World Cup slated for September 9-11 in Cape Town, South Africa.
