Christine Mboma gave a sterling performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics emerging second in the women's 200-metre final. The 18 year old also made history by bagging Namibia's first ever Olympic medal (Silver). Mboma clocked a time of 21.81 seconds behind Jamaica's Elaine Thompson-Herah, 21.53s. Her teammate, Beatrice Masilingi also managed a personal best after finishing the race in 6th place with a time of 22.28.
Even though the teenager won the hearts of many, some critics are still sceptical more so with her physique and abilities. Mboma had switched from the 400 m to the 200 m just before the Olympics because regulations put a cap on testosterone levels in women athletes. Her performance will soon raise doubts and more follow might even be proposed by the critics.
In April this year, Mboma broke the U-20 world record; recording a new mark at 49.22 seconds. She also set the seventh fastest time in the one-lap race. On Tuesday August 43rd, she proved to be a force to reckon with in the 200m as she broke the U-20 record in the final when she clocked 21.81 seconds.
Mboma was trailing in fifth place with 50 m to go yet she glided past the experienced and decorated Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryse. Talk about an accomplishment for the teenage sensation.
