World half marathon record holder Peres Jepchirchir won Kenya her third gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics when she raced to victory in a race held on Saturday morning in Sapporo.
Kenya also bagged another silver medal in the race through world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgey who came in second.
Chepchirchir crossed the tape in a time of 2:27:20 with Kosgei taking silver in 2:27:36. Molly Seidel of USA bagged bronze in 2:27:46
Making her debut at the Olympic Games, Jepchirchir pulled from Kosgei just beyond the 40km marker en route to her victory.
World marathon champion Ruth Chepngetich dropped from the race at just over 31km.
The hot and humid conditions provided tough conditions for the athletes and this led to Chepng'etich dropping out around the 30km mark, while Israel's Lonah Chemtai Salpeter dropped out at the 38km stage after looking like a strong contender for bronze.
A total of 14 athletes failed to complete the distance because of the sweltering heat in Sapporo.
