World Champion Obiri Quits Track, Moves to Road Races

Olympics 5000m silver medalist Hellen Obiri has officially retired from the track and will now shift to road races.

The World champion finished second in the 5000m behind Netherlands star Sifan Hassan and 4th in the 10,000m at the Tokyo Olympics. 

The 31-year-old who arrived in the country on Monday morning from Tokyo said she will begin her road races with 10km before moving to half marathon then eventually enter the full marathon.

“It will be very tough but I am determined to succeed in the road races, I have enough experience from the middle distance races that will help me, I will take hard work, discipline.

I will begin with 10km then more to half marathon before eventfully venturing in the full marathon,’ she explained.

“Most of the young athletes the moment they succeed in middle distance races they quickly more to the long distance races and sometimes you can’t be good in both long and short distance races. You have to chose one and focus on it before making the transition ,”added Obiri

Meanwhile, double Olympics champion Faith Kipyegon says she will continue racing  in the 1500m before shifting to the 5000m in 2022. 

The 27-year-old retained the 1500m crown after beating Laura Mir and Sifan Hassan on Friday.
