After winning the World Golf Championships (WGC)-Dell Technologies Match Play event in Texas on Sunday, March 27, Scottie Scheffler became the world's top-ranked golfer.
This follows his victory over Kevin Kisner in the World Golf Championships (WGC) final.
When Scheffer entered the tournament, he was ranked fifth in the world. Following victories over Dustin Johnson 3-1 in the semi-finals and Seamus Power 3-2 in the quarter-finals.
Scottie Scheffler defeated Kevin Kisner 4-3 in the WGC Match Play final on Sunday, claiming the World No. 1 as a result.
In just under two months, Scheffler has won three times at the Professional Golfer's Association (PGA). He takes the place of Spaniard Jon Rahm at the top of the leaderboard.
"It's not something that I didn't want to achieve or didn't believe that I could do. I grew up at Royal Oaks (Country Club in Dallas, Texas). I grew up wearing long pants to go practice because I wanted to be a professional golfer," he said.
Scheffler becomes the sixth-youngest player to reach No. 1 since the world ranking began in 1986, according to the Professional Golfer’s Association (PGA).
“That's what I dreamed of. I dreamed of being out here. I've always been, I would say, fiercely competitive, and so for me getting out here was a goal per se, and being out here, I like competing and I enjoy the challenge of playing out here every week. Just competing out here is really fun for me and just being able to win tournaments is pretty awesome,” he said.
Three victories on the PGA Tour is considered a fine career, let alone achieving the feat in the space of 42 days.
"I never got that far in my dreams," an emotional Scheffler said during the trophy ceremony. "I just play golf. I love competing. I'm happy to be out here, you know?"
