Kenya Sevens head coach Damian McGrath named the Shujaa squad that will be heading to South Africa for the 2022 World Cup.

In the Shujaa squad for the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens, McGrath has named seven returnees and five debutants.

In his squad, one of the notable names was Collins Injera who will be making his fourth consecutive appearance at the world tournament.

“Collins brings a raft of experience. He’s lived it and done it, there are not many players on the sevens circuit who’ve done and achieved what Collins has, his influence in training is very good.

“He’s very good with the younger guys and understands how sevens should be played. With the withdrawals that we’ve had, we felt it was good to bring someone like Collins in to bring that experience to the team,” McGrath stated on Injeraas selection.

The players who have received their first call for the world cup include Johnstone Olindi, Vincent Onyala, Kevin Wekesa, Tony Omondi and Edmund Anya.

McGrath noted that his squad selection was influenced by many of the key players withdrawing. He noted that Alvin Otieno left the program to pursue personal interests.

Daniel Taabu and Bush Mwale were also dropped out of the squad due to disciplinary matters.

This will be Shujaa’s sixth consecutive appearance at the Rugby World Cup 7s and will play Tonga in their opening fixture in Cape Town.

The Shujaa head coach also noted that Tonga was a physical team but he was confident his team would overcome the challenge.
