Flying High: Omanyala Highlights His Crowning 2022 Moments

Africa's fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala concluded his 2022 season on September 11, in Zagreb, Croatia. 

Omanyala finished third at the Memorial Borisa Hanzekovica, a Continental Gold Tour label race in what was his last race of the season. 

The Commonwealth champion enjoyed stellar form hitting various landmarks in his promising sprinting career.

100M Commonwealth Champion 

In August 2022, the 26-year-old become the first ever Kenyan in 60 years to win the Commonwealth Games 100m title. 

The event that was hosted in Birmingham saw Omanyala finish with a time of 10.02 seconds to clinch his first-ever global title. 

The Commonwealth gold came after he suffered some delays with his passport prior to the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where he arrived three hours before his race. 

100M and 4 by 100M African Champion 

In June 2022, Ferdinand Omanyala cruised into the final of the 100m where he won gold at the 22nd African Senior Championships in Mauritius. 

Omanyala finished the race with a time of 9.93s making him the second Kenyan to have ever won the Africa 100m title; Joseph Gikonyo won the title at the 1990 Cairo Championships. 

In the same competition in Mauritius, Omanyala together with Mike Mokamba, Samuel Imeta, and Dan Kiviasi made history after clinching Kenya's first ever 4x100 victory at the Africa Senior Athletics Championships. 

100M Kip Keino classic winner 

Ferdinand Omanyala on May 7, won the 100 metres race at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi with a time of 9.85sec. 

Omanyala beat Fred Kerley of the USA (9.92), Isaiah Young (10.13) of the USA, Brunt Jese Hendricho (10.13) of South Africa and Matidi Emmanuel (10.14) of Liberia. 

Ranked 3rd in the world in 2022 

After his outstanding race at the Kip Keino classic in May 2022, the 26-year-old sprinter registered his fastest time of the season. 

His time of 9.85 placed him third in the 2022 world ranking in the 100m race with the American duo of Fred Kerley and Trayvon Bromel at positions one and two, with a time of 9.76 and 9.81 respectively. 

60M Kenyan record 

In February 2022, the African 100m record holder clocked 6.57 seconds in the 60m sprint at the Meeting Hauts-de- France Pas-de-Calais in Lievin, France. 

Despite setting a national record, he  finished fourth in a race that was won by Italy’s Marcell Jacobs. 

Omanyala broke his previous record of 6.60 that he had set at Meeting Metz Monselle Athletor in Metz, France. 

100M,200M and 4 by 100M National Champion 

Ferdinand Omanyala, in April 2022, cruised to victory in the 100m race at the National Championship at Kasarani. 

He also won the 200m race as well helping his team win the 4 by 100m race at the Athletics Kenya Championships.
