
Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has hinted at a welfare program for retired athletes.
Namwamba made the revelation during the burial of veteran athlete Wilson Kiprugut on Saturday, November 12.
The Sports CS note that the ministry was committed to recognising and rewarding Kenyan athletes.

"We have commenced engagement with various stakeholders in the sporting arena with a view to coming up with a proper welfare plan that will take care of our sportsmen and women upon retirement.
"Already, we have commissioned a study towards the development of this welfare framework," the CS noted.
Namwamba added that the ministry had commenced developing the framework for the program framework that would ensure the retiring athletes are taken good care of during retirement.
The CS praised the sports personalities in the country noting that the government must treat the athletes better as they are national treasures.
“Our sportsmen and women have given us so much a nation and have caused our anthem to be sung in the deepest corners of the world.
'Therefore, we must return this favour by treating them better and recognising them as our national treasures, heroes and heroine." Ababu noted
Paying his respect to Kiprugut, Namwamba referred to the deceased as Kenya's John the Baptist of athletics for setting the path for other athletes in the country.
"Kiprugut opened the way for many of our athletes, he cleared the path, set the standard and motivated generations to pursue athletics as a profession," CS Ababu Namwamba stated.
