Kenya escaped a possible athletics ban following the rise in cases relating to the use of Prohibited Substance.

This follows a revelation that Kenya was part of the agenda during the council meeting held on Wednesday,  November 30.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe lauded the Kenyan government for the measures being taken to address the doping situation in the country.

“I particularly welcome the additional resource made available by the Government of Kenya in this fight. The only way that we can reduce the scale of this problem is a joint commitment across all the sports stakeholders in Kenya and of course World Athletics and its Athletics integrity unit,” Coe stated.

In a past presser, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba revealed that he had sent a letter to Coe showing the government's commitment to tackle the vice.

The Kenyan Government has committed to providing an additional Ksh3 billion($25 million) for the next five years to strengthen the country's anti-doping programs.

However, it was noted that Kenya will remain a Category A federation under the World Athletics anti-doping rules.

Under Rule 15 of the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules, category A federations have the highest doping risk.

According to Coe, the letter from Namwamba was important as it showed commitment from the highest level adding that athletics in Kenya needed collective support and help.

The World Athletics president noted that the funds will help to re-enforce the education program as well as looking at the regionality of some of the challenges.

“I hope also the fund will be used to look at the conduct of the entourage of the around the athletes, including coaches and athlete's representatives,” Coe added.
