Former Belgium coach Roberto Martinez is close to joining Portugal as the national men's team coach after parting ways with the Red Devils.

According to sports journalist David Ornstein, the 49-year-old Spaniard reached a verbal agreement to become Portugal's coach.

Ornstein noted that the details of the appointment will be finalised in one week before the deal is announced.

Martinez did not extend his contract as Belgium's coach after a disappointing outing at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Belgium left the World Cup in the group stage after finishing third behind Croatia and Morocco.

He led Belgium to their best performance when the Red Devils finished third at the 2018 World Cup.

Ornstein revealed that after leaving Belgium, Martinez has received interest from clubs and international teams.

Martinez has taken charge of club football at Wigan Athletic and Everton between 2009 and 2016.

If the appointment goes through Martinez will take charge of his first competitive match, when Portugal plays Liechtenstein in the first round of Euro 2024 qualifiers on March 23.

Portugal exited the World Cup in the quarter-finals after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Morocco.
