Ukraine was asked by the International Olympic Committee to drop its threats to boycott the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The European country had been threatening to boycott the upcoming Olympic Games if Russian and Belarusian athletes compete.

However, IOC president Thomas Bach noted that it was regrettable for Ukraine's Olympic Committee to issue such threats.

Ukraine is seeking international support to have athletes from the two countries banned as a result of ongoing Russia's invasion.

IOC explained its wish to have both Russian and Belarusian athletes compete as neutrals.

In his response, Ukraine's sports minister and Olympics Committee President Vadym Guttsait highlighted that it's not Ukraine only that wants to boycott the Paris Games but also several other European nations seeking to have the ban to be upheld.

According to BBC, the IOC president noted that comments by Ukrainian officials suggesting allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes would promote the war are defamatory.

BBC reported that IOC is yet to discuss the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes as neutrals in full.

During the Winter Paralympics in March 2022, despite IOC banning Russia and Belarus the athletes were allowed to compete under a neutral flag.

In the past Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Russia was banned as part of sanctions for doping scandals.
