Kenya’s Jaclkline Chepkoech, won gold medal in the women’s 3000m Steeplechase clocking her personal best 9:27.40 at the ongoing World Athletics Under 20 Championships at Kasarani.
Ehiopia’s Zerfe Wondemagegn was breathing on Chepkoech’s neck; however, she couldn't keep up as Chepkoech established at least a 30m lead, leaving the rest of the field behind until the very end.
Wondemagegn eventually prevailed second in 9:35.22 while Chepkoech’s compatriot Faith Cheroitich settled for bronze in 9:44.76.
"I am happy with bronze. We had planned for a 1-2 finish, but at some point I felt pain in my legs and allowed the Ethiopian to go ahead as I was sure Chepkoech had a good gap to go for gold,” stated Cheroitich.
Chepkoech defended the title which fellow countrywoman Celliphine Chespol won in the last two editions in 2016 and 2018 both in championship records.
Even though Chespol’s championship record of 9:12.79 remained untouched, Chepkoech was so elated at winning gold that she did the victory lap immediately, even before catching her breath after the outstanding performance.
Their wins saw Kenya remain on the top of the medal standings with six medals; three gold, a silver and two bronze.
“The race was good. I had prepared well, and we had a game plan to have a fast race. When the race started slow, I had to take it upon myself to take the lead. I am elated for this gold. This is just the beginning. My focus is now the Commonwealth Games and the World Championship next year. I train alongside my role model, Hyvin Kiyeng, and she has motivated me to this win,” stated Chepkoech.
