South Sudan National Women’s Team, Brighter Starlets landed in Nairobi on Thursday 7, October 2021 as they kick off preparations for Africa Cup of Nations(AWCON) qualifiers.
South Sudan is expected to play against Harambee Starlets in a two-legged fixture in the first round of the qualifiers set for October 20th and 24th respectively. The two matches will be played in Nairobi.
The team arrived from South Africa where they have been taking part in this year’s COSAFA Championship where they failed to go past the group stage.
The Sudanese have been on the rise following a series of tournaments and this would be an interesting fixture as they make a return to the continental competition.
The winner from the first round will meet either Ethiopia or Uganda in the second and final round of the qualifiers where the winner will earn a ticket to the AWCON finals that is scheduled for Morocco.
Kenya is seeking to make a second return in the continental competition following the 2016 events that was held in Cameroon where they failed to go past group stage after losing all their preliminary matches.
The 2022 AWCON finals will act as the qualifiers of the Women’s World Cup and also as the World Cup where the semi-finalists will earn an automatic qualification to the global show-piece
