As bizarre and interesting as it may seem, Ulinzi Stars showed us how they celebrated a players birthday, however this wasn't your normal type of sing along with birthday candles since the player was literally buried in soil as teammates carried on with banter.
The now 26 year-old Hillary Simiyu was ambushed by his teammates and stayed calm as the hearty prank played along…all disguised as a memorable birthday celebration. Simiyu, who came in from Nzoia Sugar, made headlines last season by scoring nine goals in the second leg of the season. Simiyu who was named as Nzoia's best scorer in the club's end of season awards had attracted interest from a couple of top flight clubs but ended up falling for Ulinzi who finished tenth on the log with 44 points.
"I have a dream of joining the class of players to have scored more than 20 goals in a season in the Kenyan league. I am working hard for it and I am certain that I will make it should the coach give me playing time and have an injury-free season," he said.
Having joined the former champions, Simiyu says he is happy to be added to their ranks and following the footsteps of the duo of Mark Bikokwa and MasitaMasuta who left the millers for the soldiers.
During the weekend, In Thika, Ulinzi Stars narrowly defeated Mathare United 1-0. Clinton Omondi struck in the 72nd minute as the 2010 league champions maintained their 100% start to the new season.
The victory saw the soldier join Bandari at the top of the standings with six points though with an inferior goal difference of two goals
